Botanica Exhibition 2027

The much-loved Botanica Exhibition will return to the Garden Gallery in May 2027 with a vibrant and thought-provoking new theme: Parties and Poisons.

Volunteer curators Alissa Cook and Katharine Rogers are delighted to welcome Jenny Winstanley to the curatorial team. Together with the Foundation and Friends Exhibition Team, we are preparing an exhibition that celebrates the finest examples of Australian botanically accurate art. In addition, we will feature a small selection of botanically inspired works, including ceramics, wood artistry, and glass art, offering visitors a beautifully diverse experience.

The Parties component of the theme invites artists to explore the many plants and flowers that have long played a role in human celebration weddings, birthdays, cultural ceremonies and festivities of all kinds. The breadth of potential subjects is truly expansive, and we look forward to seeing how artists interpret the joy and symbolism that plants bring to life’s special moments.

By contrast, the Poisons theme brings a more contemplative tone. We aim to highlight the beauty and danger of toxic plants, providing an opportunity to deepen public understanding of the vast spectrum of plant toxicity. From mild irritants to species that can be lethal if ingested, many hazardous plants are far more common than one might realise. Our librarian, Miguel, will delve into the archives to uncover fascinating books and stories for the exhibition.

Fungi are also warmly welcomed. In fact, fungi account for the highest number of plant-related poisonings in Australia Death Cap mushrooms are only one well-known example.

Australian residents producing botanically accurate 2-dimensional wall art are invited to apply. Selection will occur 8 weeks prior to the exhibition.

We look forward to presenting a rich, engaging exhibition that celebrates both the beauty and complexity of the botanical world and to receiving applications from artists across Australia.
