Corporate Volunteering Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What kind of activities will we be doing?
A. Activities vary depending on the time of year and current Garden priorities. Tasks may include weeding, mulching, planting, pruning, seed collection, habitat restoration, or other horticultural activities. All tasks are supervised by a member of our horticultural team and no prior gardening experience is required.
Q. Do I need any gardening experience?
A. No experience is necessary. Our horticultural specialists will provide all instructions, demonstrations and support throughout the session.
Q. What level of fitness is required?
A. Corporate volunteering activities involve working outdoors and may require standing, walking, bending, kneeling and light lifting. Participants should be comfortable undertaking moderate physical activity. If you have any accessibility requirements or concerns, please let us know before your session.
Q. Are there toilet facilities available?
A. Yes, public toilet facilities are available at both the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney and the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan. Prior to your session starting your horticultural specialist will be able to direct you to the nearest facilities.
Q. Can we take photos during the session?
A. Yes, we encourage participants to take photos and share their experience. Please be mindful of other visitors and follow any directions provided by staff regarding access to work areas. If you are utilising the services of a professional photographer to document the experience a permit may be required. Please let us know prior to your session so we can assist with obtaining the necessary permit.
Q. Is there parking?
A. For sessions hosted at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, there is cashless metered parking along Mrs Macquaries Road & Hospital Road. The closest carparks are the Domain Car Park and The Wharf Woolloomooloo Car Park. For more information regarding getting to the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney including public transport options please visit our Getting Here page on our website.
For sessions hosted at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, the best parking is the P3 Parking, located next to the Visitor Centre. For more information regarding getting to the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan please visit our Getting Here page on our website.
Q. It looks like it’s going to rain on our scheduled day, will our session go ahead?
Yes! Unless otherwise advised by Gardens staff, your session will proceed in the event of rain so please dress accordingly. In the case of severe weather and/or thunderstorms we may cancel or reschedule the session.
Q. Do I need to bring my own gloves and tools?
Please don’t bring in your own gloves or tools. This helps us reduce the risk of cross contamination of our precious soils and plants – i.e. our living collection. We will provide you with a pair of gardening gloves which you are welcome to take home with you after the session. Your horticultural specialist will also provide you with all the tools required for the day’s activities.
Q. What should I wear and bring?
Wear weather appropriate clothing and shoes you don’t mind getting dirty! Your session may involve kneeling and lifting so please dress comfortably. Bring a water bottle and a snack as food and refreshments are not provided.
Q. Is there somewhere I can leave my bag and belongings?
We recommend bringing only essential items, as secure storage is not available and belongings are left at your own risk.
Q. Where do I meet you on the morning of our session?
For sessions hosted at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, please meet at Woolloomooloo Gate on Mrs Macquaries Road at 8:50am for a quick briefing.
For sessions hosted at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan, please meet at the Visitor Centre at 8:50am for a quick briefing.
Q. Can corporate volunteering sessions be adapted for people with accessibility requirements?
We are committed to providing an inclusive experience wherever possible. Please let us know about any accessibility requirements when booking so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
Q. Is there a one pager I can refer to/share with volunteer attendees?
Yes! Your group organiser will receive a handy one pager with more details around what the session will include, where to meet and what to bring.
