Upcycling at home - make a thyme tower
You don’t need a large garden to grow the herbs you love - and you don't need to spend a lot of money or buy new things to make an attractive planter.
I love to make-do, upcycle and recycle when I'm working with schools and community groups on their gardens - and at home. As part of the BGANZ #plantchallenge I made a thyme tower out of some old PVC piping.
Most herbs are suitable for containers and other small spaces, and this can sit on the windowsill and provide fresh thyme all year round. I went with a few varieties of thyme, you could choose your favourite herb or mix it up.
How to make a self-watering vertical herb tower
You will need:
- A 400mm length of PVC pipe and a pipe cap
- Plumbers cement or silicone sealant
- Drill and hole saw
- River pebbles
- Geofabric
- Water inlet hose or narrow pipe
- Potting mix
- A variety of thyme plants (or try any herbs)
