Exploring the Science of Plants

Led by Tim Entwisle, this science talk series explores the fascinating science behind plants, landscapes and the natural world, connecting research and discovery with the everyday wonders of nature.

In December, Russell Barrett will join the series. Russell is a Senior Research Scientist and Systematic Botanist based at the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan and a leading researcher in the systematics of the Australian flora.

With expertise in plant systematics, phylogeny, biogeography and conservation, Russell has discovered more than 400 new plant species and is at the forefront of the NSW Plant Tree of Life Flagship project.

In conversation with Tim, Russell will share stories from his career, from discovering new species as a child in the Kimberley to identifying previously unknown plants across Australia. He will explore the remarkable diversity of Australia’s flora, the science behind discovering new species, and why understanding our plants is so important for their conservation.

This ongoing series connects science, place and people right here in the Gardens.
