Sitting in a special corner of the Garden, the memorial was erected in 2009 by the Australian and NSW Governments to commemorate the distressing experiences of those who grew up in orphanages, children's homes and other institutions last century. This corner of the Garden is dedicated to their memory and is detached from passing visitors to allow for privacy and peaceful contemplation.

The new, outstanding Amphitheatre is one of a kind, situated right in the heart of Sydney city, as a versatile venue space to hire for events.
This carving, completed in 2011, has been made on the trunk of an old Forest Red Gum which had grown in the Garden for over 200 years. YuraBirong was carved by Aboriginal artists Glen Timbery and Vic Simms. YuraBirong, which means 'People of this Place', acknowledges the Aboriginal ancestors of Australia.
